The Ajman National Museum

What kind of a history would a pearl fishing exhibit you would think? Well, if the same is showcased in an 18th century first line of defense fortress then the question gets a different meaning. The Ajman National Museum is full of such wonders from the past that have been preserved to explain to the generations ahead of the glorious past on which the foundation of the United Arab Emirates has been laid.

The prime exhibits of the Ajman Museum are manuscripts from the past, traditional folk costumes adorned by the people, archaeological excavations, souvenirs and loads of other things. The fortress where this museum is located was initially a palace and then converted into Ajman police station.

The entire fort was renovated and during this renovation, four towers were allowed to stay, two were wind towers and other two were watch towers. Together with this, the museum also has a large gate and two cannons which can be seen ahead of the fort.

The museum effectively captures the lifestyle, professions, weaponry, manuscripts among other things. During the excavations at the Al Muwaihat area, they dug up a cemetery where they even came upon funeral jewellery and pottery dating back to 3000 BC. One can even find pottery of the yore as well as religious and medical practice details at the museum. Add to this some unique wooden Dhows, irrigation systems, essentially the Ajman Museum captures the splendor and glory of the Emirati culture and traditions.

The best time to visit the Ajman National Museum would be in the winter and early spring months of October to April. Expect spike in humidity during summers.

Things to Remember while you visit the Ajman National Museum:

• The museum displays are available both English and local Arabic.
• The cemetery exhibits are truly brilliant. Way back in 1986 this was stumbled upon y workers digging for the project.
• One can rent a large mansion from the Mowaihat families in the area. They still reside here at the Al Mowaihat.
• You could also find copper, pottery, beads and other such artefacts which date back to the Bronze Age of Ajman.
• Considering fishing is so intrinsic to Ajman’s existence, a huge section is dedicated to pearl fishing and its details in the museum.
• You may find several spots to sit and fish and even cast a hook. Don’t forget to get a licence as the authorities would insist on the same.
• They have a pretty aggressive view on the conservation of the marine life.
• If not into fishing then maybe deep sea diving is your forte. There are licensed vendors who would take you deep inside.
